Who needs an Illinois emissions test
Illinois tests vehicles in the Chicago and Metro East areas, and draws the line by ZIP code. In McHenry and Kane counties a handful of ZIP codes are left out, which is why neighbors a few miles apart can have different rules.

Huntley, Woodstock, Hampshire
ZIP codes 60142, 60098, and 60140 are outside the testing area. So is Huntley Ford’s own ZIP.

Elgin, Crystal Lake, Carpentersville, Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, and McHenry are in it. Most gas vehicles are tested every two years once they are four years old. Diesel and fully electric vehicles are exempt.

The two nearest stations are at 195 Liberty Road in Crystal Lake and 13N019 Coombs Road in Elgin. Stations are open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Illinois pays up to $4,000 toward an electric vehicle
The Illinois EPA’s rebate is open from Aug. 1 to Dec. 31, 2026. It is the same in every town we serve.
- $2,000 for an eligible new or used electric vehicle, or $4,000 for applicants who qualify as low-income.
- The vehicle has to be bought, not leased, from a dealer licensed by the Illinois Secretary of State.
- Apply to the Illinois EPA within 180 days of buying.
