The 2026 Ford Mustang.Still a V8 with a stick.
The Camaro stopped in 2024 and the Challenger in 2023. The Mustang is the only one of the three still being built, and a six-speed manual is still standard equipment on the GT. Prices run from $32,995 to $106,090.

The whole decision is really one $13,805 step
Ford publishes ten prices for the 2026 Mustang and they span $73,095, which makes the range look more complicated than it is. Nine of those steps change equipment. One changes the car: the move from the four-cylinder to the V8. Everything below it is trim, and everything above it is track hardware.
$13,805 buys the V8 and the manual
An EcoBoost Fastback is $32,995 and a GT Fastback is $46,800. That step adds 165 horsepower — 315 to 480 — and a six-speed manual as standard equipment. The manual is the part you cannot buy any other way: Ford does not offer one on the EcoBoost at any price, in either body.
Premium costs less on a convertible
On the fastback, moving from EcoBoost to EcoBoost Premium is $3,350 — $32,995 to $36,345. On the convertible the same move is $1,405, from $40,440 to $41,845. Same upgrade, less than half the money, because Ford prices the base convertible high rather than the Premium one low.
So the base EcoBoost Convertible is the odd one out
At $40,440 it costs $4,095 more than an EcoBoost Premium Fastback and sits $1,405 below the Premium convertible. If the roof is what you came for, order the Premium; if it is not, the Premium fastback gives you more car for less money.
Above the GT, money buys lap times
GT Premium Fastback to Dark Horse is $13,000 — $51,080 to $64,080 — and it buys 20 horsepower plus MagneRide, a Torsen differential, Brembo front brakes and a stiffer front structure. Dark Horse Premium to Dark Horse SC is another $37,015. Neither step makes the car easier to live with.

The other two pony cars are not made any more
Until recently a Mustang page ended with a table against the Chevrolet Camaro and the Dodge Challenger. Both of those cars are out of production — Chevrolet built the last Camaro in January 2024 and Dodge ended gas-powered Challenger production in December 2023. Neither has a 2026 model year, so there is nothing to compare against and we have taken the table out rather than leave a stale one up. That leaves the Mustang as the only American pony car still in production, which is a fact rather than a slogan, and it changes what the cross-shopping actually looks like. The cars people put next to a 2026 Mustang now are the Toyota GR Supra and the BMW M240i — smaller, more expensive per horsepower, and neither available with a V8. Ford is still developing the car, too. There was a build changeover on April 13, 2026 that altered the color palette mid-year, so a Mustang built in March and one built in June are not offered in quite the same colors.
The 2026 changes, from Ford’s own list
Ford publishes what it changed for each model year. Most of the 2026 Mustang list is packages, but one change alters what you have to pay to get a manual transmission, and several items have been deleted from the standard list.
-
Dark Horse
The manual is now the option, not the standard
For 2026 the ten-speed automatic became the standard transmission on the Dark Horse and Dark Horse Premium, and the TREMEC six-speed manual with rev matching became the extra-cost upgrade. It used to be the other way round. On the GT and GT Premium the manual is still standard.
-
New package
The Mustang RTR Package, on the four-cylinder
Developed with Vaughn Gittin Jr. and built at Flat Rock, the RTR Package goes on the EcoBoost fastback. It is not only an appearance kit: it brings Dark Horse handling components, Brembo brakes, an active valve exhaust and race-derived anti-lag, along with the GT front fascia, lit nostrils, 19-inch wheels, a raised rear wing and a serialized dash plaque.
-
Colors and appearance
Two new colors in, three packages out
Adriatic Blue Metallic and Orange Fury Metallic Tri-coat are new for 2026, and the Bronze Appearance Package spread to the EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium and GT. Leaving: the California Special, the 60th Anniversary Package and the Wheel and Stripe packages. The Security Package is now called the Anti-Theft Package.
-
Standard equipment
Things that quietly stopped being standard
Floor mats are no longer standard on the 2026 Mustang. Neither is the tire inflator and repair kit on the EcoBoost trims, and the universal garage door opener and the illuminated door-sill plates are gone. The base 18-inch wheel changed from a machined face to Shadow Silver paint. Going the other way, the Ford Connectivity Package is now included for a year on every series.
Changes as published by Ford in the “Major Product Changes” pages of the 2026 Mustang Order Guide and in the Ford “What’s New: 2026 Ford Mustang” article, read Sept. 5, 2026. Also for 2026: the FX Package on GT Premium, and Ford app remote start standard on EcoBoost Premium in place of the key-fob remote start. Ford revises content during the model year, so the build date on a specific car governs what it has.
Three engines, and a fuel note Ford prints and most pages do not
There are three engines in the 2026 Mustang and a fourth if you count the supercharged 5.2L in the Dark Horse SC as its own thing, which it is. Every horsepower figure below is Ford’s, and Ford qualifies every one of them with “93-octane fuel” — including the base four-cylinder’s 315 hp.
| Engine | Power | Torque | Where you get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 turbo | 315 hp @ 5,500 | 350 lb-ft @ 3,000 | EcoBoost and EcoBoost Premium, fastback or convertible |
| 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 | 480 hp @ 7,150 · 486 with active exhaust | 415 lb-ft @ 4,900 · 418 with active exhaust | GT and GT Premium |

2.3L EcoBoost
The one that makes sense as a daily car
Automatic only. There is no manual on the four-cylinder in 2026, in either body style, at any price — which is the single most common thing people are surprised by on this car.

5.0L V8
The GT, and the reason the manual still exists
The six-speed manual is standard equipment and the ten-speed automatic is the option. The headline 486 hp needs the active exhaust; without it the same engine is rated 480 hp and 415 lb-ft.

Dark Horse
500 hp, or 795 if you go all the way
The Dark Horse runs a modified Coyote with its own oiling and cooling. The Dark Horse SC adds a supercharged 5.2L and a seven-speed dual-clutch — and no manual is offered on the SC.

Power and torque are Ford’s published figures for the 2026 Mustang, read from ford.com on Sept. 5, 2026; Ford states each of them on 93-octane fuel. The EPA separately lists the required fuel for the 2.3L and both 5.0L engines as regular gasoline — both things are true, and the practical reading is that the car runs on regular and does not make its advertised power on it. Fuel economy figures are EPA-estimated for the 2026 model year; the EPA does not rate the fastback and the convertible separately, so one figure covers both bodies. Your actual mileage will differ.

Ten trims, side by side
A filled mark means standard, a hollow mark means available at extra cost and a dash means Ford does not offer it on that trim. The body-style rows are the ones worth reading first: the GT and every Dark Horse are fastback-only.
Standard and available content is from Ford’s 2026 Mustang Order Guide and the trim pages on ford.com, read Sept. 5, 2026. Prices are Ford’s published starting MSRPs and exclude the $1,995 destination and delivery charge. The GT is fastback-only and every Dark Horse, including the SC, is fastback-only — there is no GT Convertible and no Dark Horse Convertible. The one cell marked “Ask us” is one the Order Guide settles only by inheritance between series pages, and we would rather confirm it on a specific car than guess. Ford revises trim content during the model year.

Starting MSRPs are Ford’s own published base prices for the 2026 Mustang, read from ford.com in a rendered browser on Sept. 5, 2026, and exclude taxes, title, license and the dealer documentary fee. Ford’s destination and delivery charge for the Mustang is $1,995, read from Ford’s published destination and delivery charges on Sept. 5, 2026 — so an EcoBoost Fastback is $34,990 before tax and a Dark Horse SC is $108,085. Ford can change pricing at any time. Cars are shown in Avalanche Gray on Ford’s own studio renders; Ford publishes no studio render for the Dark Horse SC, so that card uses a Ford photograph of a car shown with optional equipment instead of substituting another trim’s picture.
What you can order today is not what the year launched with
Ford ran a build changeover on April 13, 2026 and changed the palette with it. Two colors that were available at launch are not orderable now, which matters if you have seen one on a lot and assumed you could order another.

Colors as published on ford.com for the 2026 Mustang, read Sept. 5, 2026. Ford does not publish the surcharge for the extra-cost colors, so we have not invented one — ask us and we will price the specific car. Wimbledon White and Intense Lime Yellow Metallic were dropped for 2026, and Iconic Silver Metallic and Grabber Blue Metallic were dropped at the April 13, 2026 build changeover, so cars built before that date can wear them but they cannot be ordered now.
Five NHTSA stars, and an IIHS record that is nearly empty
These two agencies tell very different stories about the same car, and the honest thing is to print both. Neither has published a 2026 result, so what follows is the most recent year each of them actually tested.
NHTSA: five stars across the board, on the coupe
The 2025 Mustang coupe carries five stars overall, five for the frontal crash, five for the side crash, five for the side pole test and five for rollover, with a calculated rollover risk of 7.9 percent. That last number is the one a low, wide car earns and a tall one cannot.
NHTSA: the convertible is rated for rollover only
The 2025 Mustang convertible has a five-star rollover rating and nothing else — the frontal and side tests are listed as Not Rated. That is a gap in the testing program, not a failure, but it means the five-star headline does not transfer to the soft top.
IIHS: no award, and most tests never run
The IIHS gives the Mustang no award. Its record holds two ratings: small overlap front on the driver side is Acceptable, with structure rated Marginal and every injury measure Good, and LATCH ease of use is Marginal because the lower anchors sit too deep and take too much force. Everything else is untested.
What is untested is the longer list
Passenger-side small overlap, both moderate overlap tests, both side tests, roof strength, head restraints, headlights, front crash prevention and seat belt reminders have not been evaluated, and the IIHS itself flags the small-overlap rating as incomplete because of it. Blind spot detection, lane departure warning and prevention, and rear automatic braking are standard.
NHTSA ratings from the agency’s Safety Ratings API for the 2025 Ford Mustang, read Sept. 5, 2026; NHTSA has not rated a 2026 Mustang, so the 2025 result is what exists. IIHS ratings from iihs.org for the 2026 Mustang two-door coupe, read Sept. 5, 2026; the driver-side small overlap rating covers 2015 to 2026 model years. There is no separate IIHS entry for the convertible. Ratings apply to the tested configuration and can change as agencies publish new results.

A rear-drive V8 in McHenry County
A Mustang is a good car here for about eight months of the year. Randall Road and Route 47 are flat, open and fast enough to enjoy one, I-90 is a quiet half-hour at the V8’s 24 MPG highway rating, and the Chain O’Lakes roads on a Saturday morning are the reason people buy the convertible. The other four months are the honest part. This is a rear-wheel-drive car on wide tires, and there is no all-wheel-drive Mustang at any price. On the summer tires that come on a GT or a Dark Horse it is not a car to drive on an unplowed subdivision street in January, and the traction control cannot fix a tire compound that has gone hard in the cold. People who use one year-round here buy a second set of wheels with winter tires, and that is a real cost to put in the budget rather than a detail to discover in December. The fastback’s trunk is more usable than the shape suggests, and the rear seats are for coats rather than adults. The convertible loses trunk space to the roof mechanism. If the car has to do the school run as well, this is the wrong page and the Escape or the Explorer is the right one. We are at 13900 Automall Drive in Huntley, just off Route 47 at I-90, an easy run from Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Crystal Lake, Elgin and Woodstock.
This car is not for everyone, and the manual is slower
Edmunds gives the 2026 Mustang 7.4 out of 10 and ranks it first among muscle cars — a ranking that means less than it used to, now that the two cars it was always ranked against are out of production. The subcategory scores are where the useful criticism lives.
Fuel economy 5.0 out of 10, value 6.4
Those are Edmunds’ two lowest scores for the car, against 10 out of 10 for what they call the X Factor. Their measured economy matched the EPA exactly — 26 MPG in an EcoBoost, 18 in a GT — so the low score is about the number itself, not about the test.
The manual is half a second slower to 60
Edmunds timed a GT at 4.8 seconds with the six-speed manual and 4.3 seconds with the ten-speed automatic. If you want the manual, want it because you want to shift gears; it is not the faster car.
Their stated cons, in their words
“Interior fit and finish can feel downmarket” and “Desirable options add quite a bit to the price.” From the review body: thick windshield pillars that block the view on tighter roads, rear seats they call cramped for all but short trips, and climate controls at the bottom of the touchscreen with the fan speed behind a menu.
And the fuel-grade question nobody asks
Ford states every power figure on 93 octane while the EPA lists regular gasoline as the required fuel. Run a GT on 87 and it will be perfectly happy; it will not be a 480-horsepower car. Over 12,000 miles the EcoBoost uses about 462 gallons and a GT about 632 — 170 gallons a year, before the octane difference.
What buying here is like

2026 Mustang questions, answered with the number first
How much does a 2026 Ford Mustang cost?
Ford’s published starting prices run from $32,995 for the EcoBoost Fastback to $106,090 for the Dark Horse SC: EcoBoost Premium Fastback $36,345, EcoBoost Convertible $40,440, EcoBoost Premium Convertible $41,845, GT Fastback $46,800, GT Premium Fastback $51,080, GT Premium Convertible $56,580, Dark Horse $64,080, Dark Horse Premium $69,075. All exclude Ford’s $1,995 destination and delivery charge, plus taxes, title, license and the documentary fee — so an EcoBoost Fastback is $34,990 before tax. The gap worth knowing about is the $13,805 between the EcoBoost Fastback and the GT Fastback, because that is the one that changes the engine.
Can you still get a 2026 Mustang with a manual transmission?
Yes, on four of the ten trims. The six-speed manual is standard equipment on the GT Fastback, the GT Premium Fastback and the GT Premium Convertible, and it is an extra-cost option on the Dark Horse and Dark Horse Premium — which is a change for 2026, because on the 2025 Dark Horse the manual was the standard transmission. There is no manual on the 2.3L EcoBoost in either body, and none on the Dark Horse SC, which is dual-clutch only.
Is there a 2026 Mustang GT Convertible?
No. The GT is fastback-only. If you want a V8 with a soft top the car is the GT Premium Convertible at $56,580, and it is the only V8 convertible Ford sells. Every Dark Horse, including the SC, is also fastback-only.
What MPG does a 2026 Mustang get?
EPA-estimated, for the 2026 model year: the 2.3L EcoBoost with the automatic is 22 city, 33 highway and 26 combined; the 5.0L V8 is 16/24/19 with the automatic and 15/23/18 with the manual; the Dark Horse is 14/22/17 with either transmission. The EPA does not rate the fastback and the convertible separately, so the same figure covers both bodies, and the Dark Horse SC is not rated for 2026.
How much horsepower does the 2026 Mustang have?
315 hp from the 2.3L EcoBoost, 480 hp from the 5.0L V8 in the GT — 486 hp if the car has the active valve exhaust — 500 hp from the modified 5.0L in the Dark Horse and 795 hp from the supercharged 5.2L in the Dark Horse SC. Ford states every one of those figures on 93-octane fuel, including the four-cylinder’s, while the EPA lists regular gasoline as the required fuel. The car runs on regular; it does not make its advertised power on it.
Does the 2026 Mustang come in all-wheel drive?
No. Every Mustang is rear-wheel drive and Ford has never offered an all-wheel-drive version of this generation. Around Huntley that is worth planning for: people who drive one through the winter here run a second set of wheels with winter tires, particularly on a GT or a Dark Horse, which leave the factory on summer rubber.
How safe is the 2026 Ford Mustang?
NHTSA has not rated a 2026 Mustang. It rated the 2025 coupe five stars overall, with five stars for the frontal crash, the side crash, the side pole test and rollover, and a calculated rollover risk of 7.9 percent; the 2025 convertible is rated for rollover only. The IIHS gives the Mustang no award and has published just two ratings — driver-side small overlap Acceptable and LATCH ease of use Marginal — with the moderate overlap, side, roof strength, headlight and front crash prevention tests all not run.
What changed on the 2026 Ford Mustang?
The headline change is that the ten-speed automatic became standard on the Dark Horse and Dark Horse Premium, with the TREMEC manual moving to the options list. Ford also added the Mustang RTR Package on the EcoBoost fastback and the FX Package on the GT Premium, spread the Bronze Appearance Package to more trims, and added two colors — Adriatic Blue Metallic and Orange Fury Metallic Tri-coat. The California Special, the 60th Anniversary Package and the Wheel and Stripe packages are gone, and floor mats are no longer standard equipment.
What is the Mustang RTR Package?
A 2026 package for the EcoBoost fastback, developed with Vaughn Gittin Jr. and built at Ford’s Flat Rock plant. It is more than an appearance kit: it brings Dark Horse handling components, Brembo brakes, an active valve exhaust and race-derived anti-lag, plus the GT front fascia, lit nostrils, 19-inch RTR wheels, a raised rear wing and a serialized dash plaque. Ask us about ordering one, because it is a dealer order rather than something that arrives on the lot by accident.
What colors does the 2026 Mustang come in?
Four at no cost — Oxford White, Shadow Black, Carbonized Gray Metallic and Avalanche Gray. Five at extra cost: Adriatic Blue Metallic and Orange Fury Metallic Tri-coat, both new for 2026, plus Vapor Blue Metallic, Molten Magenta Metallic Tinted Clearcoat and Race Red. Blue Ember Metallic is restricted to the Dark Horse Appearance Package. Iconic Silver Metallic and Grabber Blue Metallic were dropped at the April 13, 2026 build changeover, so an earlier-built car can wear them but you cannot order one now. Ford does not publish the extra-cost surcharges, so ask us and we will price the specific car.
Is the Mustang the last American muscle car?
It is the last of the three pony cars still in production. Chevrolet built the final Camaro in January 2024 and Dodge ended gas-powered Challenger production in December 2023, and neither offers a 2026 model. Ford has made no announcement of an end to Mustang production and is still developing the car — there was a mid-year build changeover on April 13, 2026.
What is the difference between the Dark Horse and the Dark Horse SC?
$37,015 and 295 horsepower. The Dark Horse Premium is $69,075 with a modified 5.0L Coyote making 500 hp, an automatic as standard and the manual available. The Dark Horse SC is $106,090 with a supercharged 5.2L making 795 hp and 660 lb-ft, and a TREMEC seven-speed dual-clutch as the only transmission — there is no manual SC. The SC is not EPA-rated for 2026.
