The 2026 Ford Ranger. The cheapest one tows the most.
A $33,550 Ranger XL is rated to tow 7,500 lb and carry 1,767 lb. The $57,270 Ranger Raptor tows 5,510 and carries 1,373. That is Ford’s own arithmetic, and it decides which one you should be looking at.

The most expensive Ranger is the least capable one
Ford publishes towing and payload by engine, and the numbers run backwards against the price list. If you are buying a midsize truck to do truck things, this is the section that matters and the rest is decoration.
$23,720 more, 1,990 lb less
Ford rates the Ranger Raptor at 5,510 lb of towing and 1,373 lb of payload. It rates an XL, an XLT or a Lariat on the 2.3L at 7,500 lb and 1,767 lb. The Raptor is the most expensive Ranger by $23,720 and the least able to pull or carry anything. That is not a criticism of the truck — it is a statement about what you are buying.
The bigger engine carries less, too
The available 2.7L EcoBoost V6 makes 315 hp against the standard four-cylinder’s 270, and 400 lb-ft against 310. It tows the same 7,500 lb — and its maximum payload is 1,513 lb against 1,763. The V6 weighs more, and on a midsize truck that comes straight off what you can put in the box.
There is one cab and one bed
Every 2026 Ranger is a SuperCrew with a 4.97-foot box. Ford builds no extended cab, no regular cab and no long bed. If your job needs a six-foot box or a two-door work truck, the Ranger is not the truck, and no trim on this page changes that.
And there is no Tremor any more
Ford lists four 2026 Ranger trims — XL, XLT, Lariat and Raptor. The Tremor Off-Road Package that older reviews advertise is gone, and Ford’s own 2026 technical specifications and order guide do not mention it once. What replaced it as the off-road option on the cheap end is the FX4 Off-Road Package, which is now available on the XL.
Every number, by engine and driveline
This is Ford’s own weight table from the 2026 Ranger technical specifications, reproduced in full because the shape of it is the point.
| Engine and driveline | Maximum towing | Maximum payload | EPA combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.3L EcoBoost, rear-wheel drive | 7,500 lb | 1,767 lb | 23 MPG |
| 2.3L EcoBoost, four-wheel drive | 7,500 lb | 1,763 lb | 21 MPG |
| 2.7L EcoBoost V6, four-wheel drive | 7,500 lb | 1,513 lb | 20 MPG |
| 3.0L EcoBoost V6, Raptor | 5,510 lb | 1,373 lb | 17 MPG |
| Engine and driveline | Base curb weight | Gross vehicle weight rating | Gross combination weight rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.3L EcoBoost, rear-wheel drive | 4,240 lb | 6,050 lb | 12,370 lb |
| 2.3L EcoBoost, four-wheel drive | 4,462 lb | 6,270 lb | 12,590 lb |
| 2.7L EcoBoost V6, four-wheel drive | 4,610 lb | 6,170 lb | 12,745 lb |
| 3.0L EcoBoost V6, Raptor | 5,363 lb | 6,790 lb | 11,465 lb |

Weight is the whole explanation
A Ranger Raptor weighs 5,363 lb empty. A rear-drive 2.3L weighs 4,240. That is 1,123 lb of long-travel suspension, wider track, bigger tires, skid plates and a heavier engine, and every pound of it comes out of what the truck is allowed to carry and pull. It shows up twice. Payload is gross vehicle weight rating minus curb weight, so a heavier truck with a similar rating carries less — 1,373 lb against 1,767. And the Raptor’s gross combination weight rating, the ceiling on truck plus trailer together, is the lowest in the range at 11,465 lb even though the truck itself is the heaviest. That is where the 5,510 lb tow rating comes from. The same logic explains the V6. Ford’s 2.7L is a compacted-graphite-iron block making 315 hp and 400 lb-ft, and it is genuinely quicker. It also adds weight over the front axle, and its maximum payload is 250 lb below the four-cylinder’s. If you tow at the top of the rating and load the box at the same time, the four-cylinder is the more useful truck and it costs less. None of this makes the Raptor a bad vehicle. It makes it a specific one. It is built to be driven fast over rough open ground, and it will do that better than anything else at the price. It is just not what you buy to pull a skid-steer.
Weights, towing and payload from the 2026 Ford Ranger Pickup Technical Specifications, 01/13/26 V1.0, published by Ford and read Sept. 5, 2026. Maximum towing and payload apply when the truck is properly equipped; the figure that governs a specific truck is on its door-jamb label. Fuel economy and annual fuel cost are EPA estimates from fueleconomy.gov for the 2026 model year, read Sept. 5, 2026; the EPA’s annual figure uses its own standard assumptions and is not a prediction of what you will spend. Your actual mileage will differ.
Three engines, one transmission, all on regular
Every 2026 Ranger runs a 10-speed automatic and regular gasoline — the Raptor included, which is not true of the F-150 Raptor R.
| Engine | Power | Torque | Where you get it |

Engine figures from the 2026 Ford Ranger Pickup Technical Specifications, 01/13/26 V1.0, read Sept. 5, 2026. Fuel economy and annual fuel cost are EPA estimates from fueleconomy.gov for the 2026 model year, read the same day, and every configuration is rated on regular gasoline. The EPA publishes no rear-wheel-drive rating for the 2.7L V6. Note that ford.com’s XLT and Lariat pages display a maximum available torque of 310 lb-ft even though both trims offer the 400 lb-ft V6; the figures above are Ford’s own per-engine specifications, which are unambiguous.

Four trims, side by side
A filled mark means standard, a hollow mark means available at extra cost and a dash means Ford does not offer it on that trim. The rows worth reading first are the driver aids — a $33,550 XL does not come with blind spot monitoring.
Standard and available content is from the 2026 Ranger SuperCrew Order Guide, 03/02/26, and the 2026 Ford Ranger Pickup Technical Specifications, 01/13/26 V1.0, both published by Ford and read Sept. 5, 2026, together with ford.com’s 2026 Ranger trim pages read the same day. Prices are Ford’s published starting MSRPs; the destination row adds Ford’s published $1,895 destination and delivery charge and excludes taxes, title, license and the dealer documentary fee. Payload of 1,767 lb is the rear-drive 2.3L figure; four-wheel drive and the V6 carry less, and the towing and payload section gives every number. BlueCruise is listed for completeness because buyers ask: Ford does not offer it on the Ranger on any trim. Ford revises trim content during the model year.
What each of the four actually buys you
Ford’s published starting MSRPs, each excluding the $1,895 destination and delivery charge. The gap from bottom to top is $23,720 — most of it spent between the Lariat and the Raptor.

Starting MSRPs are Ford’s own published base prices for the 2026 Ranger, read from ford.com in a rendered browser on Sept. 5, 2026, and exclude the $1,895 destination and delivery charge, taxes, title, license and the dealer documentary fee. Ford can change pricing at any time. Trim content is from the 2026 Ranger SuperCrew Order Guide, 03/02/26. The four renders are Ford’s own 2026 Ranger Ad Planner images, all in Carbonized Gray Metallic and cropped to one common convention so the trucks are comparable. Three of them wear an appearance package because that is how Ford renders them — the XL with the STX package, the XLT and the Lariat with the Sport package. The XL and XLT renders are rear-wheel drive; the Lariat and Raptor are four-wheel drive.
Almost nothing, and Ford says so itself
The 2026 order guide’s Major Product Changes page prints the word “None” against Mechanical, Interior/Comfort, Safety/Security and Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology. Here is the entire list of what did change.
A power moonroof, on two trims
Option code 90B, new for 2026 and optional on the XLT and Lariat. On the standard equipment group it brings a power-sliding rear window with it. Ford lists it as late availability — spring 2026 — so a truck on the lot today may not have been buildable with it.
One color in, one color out
Avalanche joins the range as a new extra-cost color, available on the XLT, Lariat and Raptor. Azure Gray is deleted. That is the whole exterior change for the model year, and Ford publishes no surcharge amount for Avalanche or for any of the other extra-cost colors.
FX4 comes down to the XL
The FX4 Off-Road Package, option code 914, is now optional on the XL where it previously was not. It is four-wheel drive only. With the Tremor package gone from the range, this is the cheapest way into an off-road-equipped Ranger and it sits on the trim with the highest payload.
Two new appearance items
Black Appearance Graphics, code 68F, is a new option on top of the existing Black Appearance Package. An 18-inch chrome-like PVD wheel is new on the XLT, and a Job 2 update added a 17-inch black-painted aluminum wheel on the Raptor. SiriusXM with 360L on a three-year plan is also flagged new.

On an XLT, adaptive cruise and a trailer brake controller fight each other
This one catches people, and it is worth two minutes at the desk. On the XLT there are three relevant boxes. The Technology Package (67Y) brings Adaptive Cruise Control with Speed Sign Recognition, front parking sensors and a 360-degree camera. The Advanced Towing Package (67P) brings a trailer brake controller and Pro Trailer Backup Assist. And Ford’s order guide says the Technology Package is not available with the Advanced Towing Package. So if you want adaptive cruise and a trailer brake controller on the same XLT, neither of those two is the answer. You need the Advanced Towing Package Plus Technology Package — code 67G — which carries both sets of content in one box. Ordering 67P because it says “towing” on it leaves you without adaptive cruise, and there is no way to add it afterwards. On the Lariat the problem disappears, because adaptive cruise and the 360-degree camera are already standard; 67G there adds only the trailer items. On the XL neither package is offered at all. If you are ordering rather than buying off the lot, tell us what you actually want the truck to do and we will read the codes back to you before anything is submitted.
Changes as published by Ford in the 2026 Ranger SuperCrew Order Guide, 03/02/26, under Major Product Changes, read Sept. 5, 2026. Package codes and their compatibility restrictions are from the same document. Ford revises content during the model year, so the build date on a specific truck governs what it has and what it could have been ordered with.
Nine colors, three at no cost
Avalanche is new for 2026 and is not offered on the XL. Shelter Green is Raptor-only. Azure Gray was dropped.
| Color | Cost |
|---|---|
| Carbonized Gray Metallic | No cost |
| Oxford White | No cost |
| Shadow Black | No cost |

| Desert Sand | Extra cost |
| Marsh Gray | Extra cost |

Colors as published by Ford in the 2026 Ranger questions on ford.com, read Sept. 5, 2026, cross-checked against the order guide’s Major Product Changes page. Ford does not publish the surcharge for the extra-cost colors, so we have not invented one — ask us and we will price the specific truck. Shelter Green is also a Raptor-only color on the F-150, where it cannot be ordered on any other trim either.
Four NHTSA stars, no IIHS award, and a Poor for the child seat anchors
Both agencies have rated the 2026 truck — no falling back to an older model year on this page. Here is all of it, including the parts that are uncomfortable.
NHTSA: four overall, five on every crash test
The 2026 Ranger SuperCrew rates five stars for the frontal crash, five for the side crash and five for the side pole test, in both rear-wheel and four-wheel drive. Overall is four stars, because rollover is three. Rollover risk is 22.8 percent with four-wheel drive and 27.9 percent with rear-wheel drive — and note that is the opposite way round from the Expedition and the F-150, where four-wheel drive carried the higher figure.
IIHS: Good in front, Marginal in the back seat
Small overlap front is Good on both sides, with a Good structure and every driver injury measure Good. The updated moderate overlap front test rates Marginal, and it is entirely the rear passenger: structure Good, all driver measures Good, rear passenger head and neck Marginal with restraints Acceptable. The institute recorded the rear dummy’s head coming close to the front seatback.
The date on the door jamb matters
The IIHS moderate overlap rating applies only to 2025 and 2026 Rangers built after April 2025. In the institute’s words, “changes were made to the rear seat belt buckles to improve rear occupant protection.” If you are looking at a used 2025, the build date is on the certification label on the driver’s door or B-pillar, and it decides which truck you are actually looking at.
LATCH is Poor, and headlights split by trim
Child seat anchors rate Poor: two rear positions have complete hardware and a third has a tether anchor only. Headlights are rated in two variations — the Raptor’s curve-adaptive LED projectors are Acceptable, while the XL and XLT’s LED reflectors are Marginal, with IIHS recording that on the straightaway “visibility was inadequate on both sides of the road.” The institute does not name the Lariat in either variation, so we are not going to assign it one.
NHTSA ratings from the agency’s Safety Ratings API for the 2026 Ford Ranger SuperCrew, read Sept. 5, 2026; the 2024 and 2025 trucks carry identical figures. IIHS ratings from iihs.org for the 2026 Ford Ranger crew cab pickup, read Sept. 5, 2026. The Ranger was redesigned for the 2024 model year; the institute’s tested vehicles are a 2024 Ranger XLT SuperCrew 4wd and a 2025 Ranger SuperCrew XLT 4-door 4wd, and it applies the small overlap and side results to 2024 through 2026 models and the moderate overlap result only to 2025–26 models built after April 2025. The Ranger carries no Top Safety Pick award. Ratings apply to the tested configuration and can change as the agencies publish new results.

Specifications from the 2026 Ford Ranger Pickup Technical Specifications, 01/13/26 V1.0, and the 2026 Ranger SuperCrew Order Guide, 03/02/26, both published by Ford; fuel economy and annual fuel cost from fueleconomy.gov for the 2026 model year; safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS — all read Sept. 5, 2026. Towing and payload maximums apply when the truck is properly equipped; the figure that governs a specific truck is on its door-jamb label. Ford revises specifications during the model year.

The size is the argument, in a garage and in a parking lot
The Ranger is 210.6 inches long and 75.5 inches wide without the mirrors. An F-150 SuperCrew is roughly a foot and a half longer and several inches wider. In McHenry and Kane counties that difference shows up in three specific places: the older attached garages in Lake in the Hills and Algonquin, the parking structure at Woodfield, and the drive-through at any coffee place on Route 47. It is a 42-foot turning circle against the F-150’s much larger one, and that is the number you feel in a lumber yard or reversing a trailer in a cul-de-sac. If you have owned a full-size truck and found yourself planning routes around it, this is the truck that stops you doing that. Winter is the usual Illinois argument, and here it is simple: four-wheel drive is optional on the XL, XLT and Lariat and standard on the Raptor. Ford’s FX4 Off-Road Package, now available on all three lower trims, adds the off-road hardware without the Raptor’s weight penalty. Ground clearance is 9.3 inches on a standard Ranger, which is more than most crossovers and enough for an unplowed subdivision street. The honest limit is the bed. Four foot eleven is a short box. A sheet of plywood does not lie flat with the tailgate up, and if you are hauling building materials weekly the Ranger will annoy you. For bikes, mulch, a dirt bike, camping kit and dump runs, it is the right size and it fits where the big truck does not. We are at 13900 Automall Drive in Huntley, just off Route 47 at I-90, an easy run from Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Crystal Lake, Elgin and Woodstock.
Four reasons to buy something else
Every number below is Ford’s, the EPA’s, NHTSA’s or the IIHS’s, not our opinion.
If you tow seriously, 7,500 lb is the ceiling
And it is a real ceiling — no engine, package or driveline takes a Ranger past it. A properly equipped F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost is rated at 13,500 lb, and you can order that combination on an XLT that costs about what a Ranger Lariat does. If the trailer is why you are shopping, weigh the trailer first and work backwards from there.
The bed is four foot eleven, and that is the only bed
Ford builds no long box and no second cab style for the Ranger. Plywood and drywall do not lie flat with the tailgate closed, and there is no configuration that fixes it. If you need a six-and-a-half-foot box, the F-150 offers one and the Ranger never will.
The safety record has real gaps
No IIHS award. The updated moderate overlap test rates Marginal on the rear passenger’s head and neck, and that rating only applies to trucks built after April 2025. Child seat anchors rate Poor. Headlights on the XL and XLT rate Marginal, with the institute recording inadequate visibility on both sides of the road. If children ride in the back regularly, read the safety section in full before you decide.
If you only need a truck occasionally, this is a lot of truck
A Maverick starts far below a Ranger, returns considerably better fuel economy and does most weekend jobs. The Ranger earns its money when you tow near its rating, drive on rough ground, or need five real seats and a proper frame. If your truck use is a couple of dump runs a year, the smaller one is the honest recommendation and we will make it.
- You need more than 7,500 lb or a longer bedThe full F-150 range, with towing and payload split by engine, cab and driveline
- You need a truck only now and thenThe Maverick is smaller, cheaper to run, and enough for most weekend jobs

What buying here is like

2026 Ford Ranger questions, answered with the number first
How much is a 2026 Ford Ranger?
Ford’s published starting MSRPs are $33,550 for the XL, $35,575 for the XLT, $43,955 for the Lariat and $57,270 for the Raptor. Ford’s destination and delivery charge is $1,895, which makes an XL $35,445 and a Raptor $59,165 before taxes, title, license and the dealer documentary fee. The spread from the cheapest Ranger to the most expensive is $23,720.
How much can a 2026 Ford Ranger tow?
7,500 lb, properly equipped, on the 2.3L four-cylinder or the 2.7L V6, in either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The Ranger Raptor is rated at 5,510 lb — 1,990 lb less than every other Ranger, because it weighs 5,363 lb empty and has the lowest gross combination weight rating in the range at 11,465 lb. No Ranger tows more than 7,500 lb in any configuration.
How much can a 2026 Ford Ranger carry?
Maximum payload is 1,767 lb on a rear-drive 2.3L and 1,763 lb with four-wheel drive. The 2.7L V6 drops it to 1,513 lb and the Raptor to 1,373 lb — the heavier the truck, the less it is allowed to carry. The figure that governs your specific truck is printed on the label in the driver’s door jamb, and it is the one that counts.
Is the Ranger Raptor worth it?
It depends entirely on what you want it for. For $23,720 over an XL you get 405 hp instead of 270, 2.5-inch FOX Live Valve shocks, a Watts-link rear suspension, locking front and rear differentials and 10.7 inches of ground clearance. You give up 1,990 lb of towing, 394 lb of payload and 6 MPG combined, and it costs the EPA’s estimated $950 a year more to fuel. If you drive fast over rough open ground it is superb. If you tow or haul, it is the wrong Ranger and an XLT does the job better for less.
What engines does the 2026 Ford Ranger come with?
Three. The standard 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder makes 270 hp and 310 lb-ft and is on the XL, XLT and Lariat. The available 2.7L EcoBoost V6 makes 315 hp and 400 lb-ft and can be ordered on the XLT and Lariat. The Ranger Raptor gets a 3.0L EcoBoost V6 making 405 hp and 430 lb-ft that no other Ranger can have. All three use a 10-speed automatic and all three run on regular gasoline.
What MPG does a 2026 Ford Ranger get?
EPA-estimated: 21 city, 25 highway and 23 combined for the 2.3L with rear-wheel drive; 19, 24 and 21 with four-wheel drive; 18, 23 and 20 for the 2.7L V6; and 16, 18 and 17 for the Raptor. The EPA’s own annual fuel cost estimates run from $2,650 for the rear-drive four-cylinder to $3,600 for the Raptor. Every configuration runs on regular.
Is there a 2026 Ford Ranger Tremor?
No. Ford lists four 2026 Ranger trims — XL, XLT, Lariat and Raptor — and the word Tremor does not appear anywhere in Ford’s 2026 Ranger technical specifications or its order guide. The Tremor Off-Road Package that older reviews mention is not part of the 2026 range. The FX4 Off-Road Package is the off-road option now, and new for 2026 it is available on the XL as well as the XLT and Lariat.
What cab and bed sizes does the Ranger come in?
One of each. Every 2026 Ranger is a SuperCrew with four full doors, five seats and a 4.97-foot cargo box holding 43.5 cubic feet. Ford builds no extended cab, no regular cab and no longer bed for this truck. If you need a six-and-a-half-foot box, that is an F-150 conversation.
Does the Ford Ranger have BlueCruise?
No, and it cannot be added. Ford’s own BlueCruise page lists the system as available on the Mustang Mach-E, F-150, F-150 Lightning, Expedition and Explorer — the Ranger is not among them, and it appears nowhere in the 2026 order guide. The Lariat and Raptor do come with Adaptive Cruise Control with Speed Sign Recognition as standard, which is a different and less capable thing: it holds a gap, it does not steer for you.
Does the Ranger XL come with blind spot monitoring?
Not as standard. On the XL, Ford Co-Pilot360 is an optional package. What is standard is Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane-Keeping Aid and an analog rear view camera. The package adds BLIS with cross-traffic alert and trailer coverage, the full Lane-Keeping System, auto high-beams, reverse park aid, reverse brake assist and a digital camera. On the XLT and above, Co-Pilot360 is standard. The IIHS records the same thing independently — it lists blind spot detection as optional on this truck.
How safe is the 2026 Ford Ranger?
Mixed, and worth reading properly. NHTSA gives the 2026 SuperCrew five stars for the frontal crash, five for side, five for the side pole test and three for rollover, which pulls the overall down to four. IIHS gives it no award: small overlap front is Good, the updated side test is Acceptable, but the updated moderate overlap front test is Marginal on the rear passenger’s head and neck, child seat anchors rate Poor, and headlights are Marginal on the XL and XLT. The moderate overlap rating applies only to trucks built after April 2025, when Ford changed the rear seat belt buckles.
What colors does the 2026 Ford Ranger come in?
Nine. Three at no cost — Carbonized Gray Metallic, Oxford White and Shadow Black. Six at extra cost — Avalanche, which is new for 2026 and offered on the XLT, Lariat and Raptor only; Desert Sand; Marsh Gray; Ruby Red Metallic; Velocity Blue; and Shelter Green, which only the Ranger Raptor can have. Azure Gray was dropped for 2026. Ford does not publish the surcharges, so ask us and we will price the specific truck.
