Free credit score estimator
See where you stand before you shop. Car and Driver’s credit tool, powered by Equifax, shows your Equifax Credit Score in a few minutes — no Social Security number, no date of birth, and no effect on your credit.
Get your free credit score
Four short steps on Car and Driver’s secure form. Your score is shown on screen and emailed to you.
Handled by Car and Driver on their own secure site. It asks for your name, email, ZIP code and a few details about you, but not your Social Security number or date of birth, and checking does not affect your credit.
If the form does not appear, use the button above or call (847) 669-6060 and we will take it from there.
The Equifax Credit Score is based on an Equifax Credit Score model and is not the same as the scores lenders use to assess your creditworthiness. Black Book, which runs the tool, is not a consumer reporting agency.
How it works
Four steps, a few minutes. Nothing here asks for your Social Security number or date of birth.
| Step | What it asks for |
|---|---|
| 1. Your name | First name, last name and email. Use your full legal name — it is how Equifax finds your file |
| 2. Your ZIP code | The ZIP code of your home address |
| 3. Your info | A few details that confirm it is your file |
| 4. Your next vehicle | The vehicle you are shopping for |
Equifax matches your name and address to your credit file. A nickname or an old address is the most common reason a score cannot be found.
A score check is not a credit application
The estimator tells you roughly where you stand. It does not get you approved for anything. When you are ready to buy, the credit application is the step that goes to our finance office and to lenders.
| Credit estimator | Credit application |
|---|---|
| Social Security number | Not asked |
| Date of birth | Not asked |
| Effect on your credit | None |
| What you get | Your Equifax Credit Score, on screen and by email |
| Who sees the result | Only you |
Credit score questions
Does checking my score affect my credit?
No. The estimator does not ask for your Social Security number or date of birth, and checking your score this way does not affect your credit.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no charge for the score, and you do not have to buy anything or apply for anything to get it.
Who sees my score?
Only you. Equifax provides the score to you alone — it is shown on screen and sent to you by email. Huntley Ford does not receive your score.
Is this the score a lender will use?
Not exactly. The Equifax Credit Score comes from an Equifax model and is not the same as the scores lenders use. Treat it as a good guide to where you stand, not as the number a lender will quote from.
What happens to the details I enter?
Equifax uses your name and address to find your file and calculate the score. The tool is set up for Huntley Ford, so your contact details and the vehicle you pick in step 4 can reach our team, who may follow up — tell us if you would rather we did not.
I have my score. What next?
If you are ready, apply for financing — that is the full application our finance office works with lenders. If you want to talk it through first, call us and we will tell you what to expect for the vehicle you have in mind.
