The 2027 Ford Expedition. The driveline decides it.
A rear-drive Expedition tows 6,000 lb. The same truck with four-wheel drive tows 9,600. Nothing else you tick on the order sheet moves the number that far — and new for 2027, Ford made it easier to order the rear-drive one.

One box on the order sheet decides what it can pull
The Expedition has seven trims and they span $22,095, but the single choice that changes what the vehicle can do costs a fraction of that and is easy to get wrong. Ford publishes the towing figures split by driveline, and the gap between them is enormous.
3,600 lb, for the driveline alone
Ford rates a rear-drive Expedition at 6,000 lb and the same vehicle with four-wheel drive and the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package at 9,600 lb. That is a 60 percent increase from one decision. If there is a boat, a camper or a horse trailer in your life, this is the only line on this page that matters.
And new for 2027, it is easier to get wrong
Ford’s own list of 2027 changes includes this: “4×2 is now available on Expedition Platinum and King Ranch models.” It was not before. You can now order an $82,695 King Ranch that tows 6,000 lb — less than a $63,600 Active with four-wheel drive. Nobody is going to stop you.
The longest one is not the strongest one
Expedition MAX 4×4 is rated at 9,000 lb against 9,600 for the standard body. The MAX gains 11.8 inches of length and 14.5 cubic feet behind the third row, and gives up 600 lb of towing to get them. If you need both the third-row space and the full tow rating, that is a conversation to have before you order.
The engine is not the constraint you think
The Active, Platinum and King Ranch get a 400 hp, 480 lb-ft 3.5L EcoBoost as standard. The 440 hp High-Output is standard on the Tremor and available on the Platinum and MAX Platinum — and is not offered on the Active or the King Ranch at all. So the $82,695 King Ranch cannot have the engine the $70,550 Platinum can.
$3,000 for 11.8 inches
Ford charges exactly the same $3,000 for the MAX body on every trim that offers it. There is no MAX Tremor. Here is what the money buys and what it costs.
| Measure | Expedition | Expedition MAX | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 209.9 in | 221.7 in | 11.8 in longer |
| Cargo behind the third row | 22.9 cu ft | 37.4 cu ft | 14.5 cu ft more |
| Cargo behind the second row | 69.9 cu ft | 84.5 cu ft | 14.6 cu ft more |
| Cargo behind the first row | 108.5 cu ft | 123.1 cu ft | 14.6 cu ft more |
| Maximum towing, 4×4 | 9,600 lb | 9,000 lb | 600 lb less |
| Maximum towing, 4×2 | 6,000 lb | 6,300 lb | 300 lb more |
| Width including mirrors | 94.6 in | 94.6 in | the same |
| Price, any trim that offers it | — | — | $3,000 more |

The question is the third row, not the whole car
Both bodies seat the same seven or eight people. The MAX does not add a row and it does not add width — it is the same 94.6 inches across the mirrors, so it fits the same garage and the same parking space at the store. What it adds is 11.8 inches behind the rear axle, and almost all of that shows up as usable space behind the third row. That is the test. Fold the third row and the standard Expedition already swallows 69.9 cubic feet; almost nobody needs more than that. Keep the third row up and the standard car leaves you 22.9 cubic feet — enough for a big grocery run, not enough for seven people’s luggage. The MAX gives you 37.4. So: if the third row is occasional, the standard body is the better buy and it tows 600 lb more. If the third row is up most weeks and you still need the cargo space, the MAX is worth $3,000 and it is the only version of this vehicle that solves the problem. One more thing worth knowing before you sign: there is no MAX Tremor. If you want the off-road hardware you are taking the short body.
The 2027 changes, from Ford’s own list
Ford publishes what it changed for each model year. The 2027 Expedition list is short, and one item on it is more consequential than it looks.

The one that matters
Rear-wheel drive comes to the Platinum and King Ranch
Ford’s words: “4×2 is now available on Expedition Platinum and King Ranch models.” On paper it is a cost and economy option. In practice it takes the maximum tow rating from 9,600 lb to 6,000 lb on the two most expensive trims in the range, and nothing on the window sticker shouts about it.

Two engines, one transmission, and four tow ratings
Both engines are versions of the same 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and both run on regular. What separates the four towing figures is not the engine at all — it is the driveline and the body length.

Engine and towing figures as published by Ford for the 2027 Expedition, read from ford.com on Sept. 5, 2026. Maximum towing requires the vehicle to be properly equipped, and Ford’s highest figure names the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. Fuel economy is EPA-estimated for the 2027 model year: 16 city, 23 highway and 18 combined with rear-wheel drive, and 15 city, 22 highway and 18 combined with four-wheel drive, both on regular gasoline. The EPA publishes one rating per driveline — it does not rate the MAX or the High-Output engine separately. Your actual mileage will differ.

Four trims, two lengths, side by side
A filled mark means standard, a hollow mark means available at extra cost and a dash means Ford does not offer it on that trim. The two rows worth reading first are the drivelines and the High-Output engine.
Standard and available content is from ford.com’s 2027 Expedition trim pages and questions, read Sept. 5, 2026. Prices are Ford’s published starting MSRPs and exclude the $2,795 destination and delivery charge, taxes, title, license and the dealer documentary fee. Ground clearance figures are Ford’s minimum running clearance. Towing maximums apply when the vehicle is properly equipped, and the 9,600 lb figure names the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. Ford revises trim content during the model year.
Four trims, and the $3,000 decision on three of them

Starting MSRPs are Ford’s own published base prices for the 2027 Expedition, read from ford.com in a rendered browser on Sept. 5, 2026, and exclude the $2,795 destination and delivery charge, taxes, title, license and the dealer documentary fee. Ford can change pricing at any time. Renders are Ford’s own 2027 Expedition images in Agate Black Metallic; Ford publishes no render of the standard-length Active, so that card shows the MAX Active — the same trim in the longer body, not a different trim substituted for it. Ford revises trim content during the model year, so the build date on a specific vehicle governs what it has.
Two trims got cheaper for 2027, and two cost more
Ford still publishes the 2026 Expedition alongside the 2027, and its trim cards offer Search Inventory rather than Build and Price — the tell that it is remaining stock rather than something you can order. Both years were read from ford.com the same day. If you are standing next to a leftover 2026, this is the table that matters.
| Trim | 2026 | 2027 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active | $62,700 | $63,600 | $900 more |
| Platinum | $74,250 | $70,550 | $3,700 less |
| Tremor | $81,700 | $82,400 | $700 more |
| King Ranch | $84,360 | $82,695 | $1,665 less |
The 2027 Platinum lists $3,700 below the 2026
That is not a typographical error and it is not a rebate — it is Ford’s own published starting MSRP on both pages, read the same afternoon. Both model years list the High-Output engine as available on the Platinum, so it is not an engine that moved. We do not know why, and we are not going to invent a reason. What it means practically is that a leftover 2026 Platinum has to be discounted hard before it beats the new one.
But the 2026 is a mile per gallon better on the highway
The EPA rates the 2026 rear-drive Expedition at 16 city, 24 highway and 19 combined, and the 2027 at 16, 23 and 18. Its published annual fuel estimate went from $3,250 to $3,400. Four-wheel drive is unchanged at 15, 22 and 18 in both years. So the older car is very slightly the cheaper one to run, if it is rear-drive — which is the driveline that also tows 3,600 lb less.
The 2026 cannot have the 2027’s new things
Rear-wheel drive on the Platinum and King Ranch, the 30th Anniversary Appearance Package with Blue Ember Metallic, Bronze Fire Metallic Tinted Clearcoat and Nocturnal Blue Metallic are all 2027 items. On the other hand, the Ford Security Package subscription arrangement is also a 2027 item, and some buyers will read that column the other way.
Safety ratings are the older car’s either way
NHTSA has rated the 2026 Expedition and has not yet rated the 2027. The IIHS ratings on this page come from 2023 and 2024 test vehicles that the institute applies to 2023 through 2026 models. Nothing on the safety section of this page distinguishes the two model years, because the agencies do not.
2026 and 2027 starting MSRPs read from ford.com on Sept. 5, 2026, both in a rendered browser; each excludes destination and delivery, taxes, title, license and the dealer documentary fee. Fuel economy is EPA-estimated, from fueleconomy.gov, read Sept. 5, 2026; annual fuel cost is the EPA’s own estimate on its standard assumptions and not a prediction of what you will spend. Availability of leftover 2026 vehicles changes daily — call us and we will tell you what is actually on the ground.
Three at no cost, and one you can only get one way
Blue Ember Metallic is tied to the Platinum’s 30th Anniversary Appearance Package. Two more colors are new for 2027 and Ford lists them on select models rather than the whole range.

Colors read from Ford’s 2027 Expedition 360-degree viewer on the Active trim on Sept. 5, 2026, together with the 2027 changes Ford publishes in its Expedition questions. Availability varies by trim and we did not step the viewer through every one, so treat this as the range rather than a trim-by-trim list. Ford publishes no surcharge amounts for the extra-cost colors, so we have not printed any — ask us and we will price the specific vehicle.
Five stars overall, three for rollover, and no IIHS award
This is the least comfortable safety section this site carries, and we are printing all of it. Neither agency has rated a 2027 Expedition; both figures below come from earlier cars on the same body, and we say which.
NHTSA: five stars overall, three for rollover
The 2026 Expedition and Expedition MAX both rate five stars overall, five for the frontal crash, five for the side crash and five for the side pole test. Rollover is three stars, with a calculated risk of 20.4 percent on four-wheel drive and 23.7 percent on rear-wheel drive. Three stars is the lowest sub-score on any vehicle this site publishes. A tall body-on-frame SUV is hard to keep on its feet, and the star reflects that rather than a defect.
IIHS: no award, in 2025 or in 2026
The Expedition carries no Top Safety Pick. Small overlap front rates Marginal, the updated moderate overlap front test rates Marginal, the updated side test rates Good and seat belt reminders rate Good. Headlights, front crash prevention and LATCH ease of use are all unrated — the institute has simply not tested them on this vehicle.
In the small overlap test, the structure rates Poor
That is worth reading carefully. Every driver injury measure in that test — head and neck, chest, thigh and hip, leg and foot, restraints and kinematics — rates Good. The Poor is the structure and safety cage: the institute recorded more intrusion into the footwell and the occupant compartment than it wants to see. The dummy came out fine; the shell around it did not.
In the moderate overlap test, it is the back seat
The structure is Good there and every driver measure is Good. The Marginal comes from the rear passenger, whose chest measure rates Marginal with restraints and kinematics Acceptable. Standard equipment is better than the ratings suggest: blind spot detection, lane departure warning and prevention, and rear automatic braking are all standard.
NHTSA ratings from the agency’s Safety Ratings API for the 2026 Ford Expedition and Expedition MAX, read Sept. 5, 2026; NHTSA has not published 2027 ratings. IIHS ratings from iihs.org for the 2026 Ford Expedition 4-door SUV, read Sept. 5, 2026; the institute’s tested vehicles are a 2023 Expedition XLT 4wd and a 2024 Expedition XLT 4wd and it applies both results to 2023 through 2026 models. The Expedition was last redesigned for the 2018 model year. Ratings apply to the tested configuration and can change as the agencies publish new results.

Specifications from ford.com’s 2027 Expedition pages and questions, fuel economy and annual fuel cost from fueleconomy.gov for the 2027 model year, and safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS — all read Sept. 5, 2026. The EPA publishes one rating per driveline and does not rate the MAX body or the High-Output engine separately. Towing maximums apply when the vehicle is properly equipped; the figure that governs a specific vehicle is on its door-jamb label. Ford revises specifications during the model year.

94.6 inches wide, and that is before the mirrors fold
Two practical things about living with an Expedition in McHenry and Kane counties, and neither is on a spec sheet. The first is that the width does not change between the two bodies. Both are 94.6 inches across the mirrors, which is wider than a lot of older attached garages allow for comfortably once there is a bin and a bike in there. Measure the opening and measure the space beside it before you order, not after — the MAX costs you length in the driveway, not width in the garage, and people get that backwards. The second is winter. Four-wheel drive is what makes an unplowed subdivision street a non-event, and it is the same box that takes towing from 6,000 lb to 9,600. In this county those two arguments point the same way, which is unusual and worth saying plainly. If your Expedition is going to spend January here, the rear-drive one is a harder case to make than the fuel figures suggest — and the fuel figures barely differ anyway, at 18 MPG combined either way for 2027. On the road it is a very easy thing to cover distance in. I-90 to O’Hare with seven people and their bags is what this vehicle is for, and BlueCruise makes that stretch genuinely less tiring — standard on the King Ranch, available further down the range. Around town it is exactly as big as it looks and the 360-degree camera earns its money in the parking lot at Algonquin Commons. We are at 13900 Automall Drive in Huntley, just off Route 47 at I-90, an easy run from Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Crystal Lake, Elgin and Woodstock.
Four reasons to buy something else
Every number below is Ford’s, the EPA’s, NHTSA’s or the IIHS’s, not our opinion. The Expedition is very good at a specific job; here is where it is the wrong answer.
If you tow seriously, 9,600 lb is the ceiling
And that is the best case — four-wheel drive, standard body, Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. A properly equipped F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost is rated at 13,500 lb, nearly 4,000 lb more, and you can order that on a truck that costs less than an Active. If the trailer is the reason you are shopping, start from the trailer’s weight and work backwards.
The safety record is genuinely mixed
Three NHTSA rollover stars, no IIHS award in either 2025 or 2026, Marginal in both frontal tests and a Poor for the structure in the small overlap test. Every driver injury measure in that test is Good, and the standard driver aids are good — but if a Top Safety Pick is on your list of requirements, this vehicle does not have one and has not had one recently.
18 MPG combined, and 22.9 cu ft with everyone aboard
The EPA puts annual fuel at $3,400 on its own assumptions, whichever driveline you pick. And with the third row up, the standard-length Expedition leaves you 22.9 cubic feet — less than a lot of mid-size crossovers offer behind their second row. If you carry seven people and their luggage at the same time regularly, it is the MAX or nothing.
If you do not need a third row every week, this is a lot of vehicle
209.9 inches long, 94.6 wide, and $66,395 delivered at the cheapest. An Explorer seats six or seven, costs substantially less, is easier to park and returns better fuel economy. The Expedition earns its size when the third row is genuinely in use and there is something heavy on the back — otherwise you are paying for capability you will not touch.
- You need more than 9,600 lb of towingThe full F-150 range, with towing split by engine, cab and driveline
- The third row is occasional, not weeklyThe Explorer does three rows in a smaller, cheaper, more economical package
- You need all of itSee the Expeditions on the ground in Huntley, driveline and body length listed
What buying here is like

2027 Ford Expedition questions, answered with the number first
How much is a 2027 Ford Expedition?
Ford’s published starting MSRPs are $63,600 for the Active, $70,550 for the Platinum, $82,400 for the Tremor and $82,695 for the King Ranch. The MAX body adds a flat $3,000 on every trim that offers it, so a MAX King Ranch starts at $85,695. Ford’s destination and delivery charge is $2,795, which makes an Active $66,395 and a MAX King Ranch $88,490 before taxes, title, license and the dealer documentary fee.
How much can a 2027 Ford Expedition tow?
It depends almost entirely on the driveline. Ford rates a four-wheel-drive Expedition with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package at 9,600 lb and a rear-wheel-drive one at 6,000 lb — a 3,600 lb difference from one box on the order sheet. The MAX is rated at 9,000 lb with four-wheel drive and 6,300 lb with rear-wheel drive. All four figures require the vehicle to be properly equipped.
Does the Expedition MAX tow more than the standard Expedition?
With four-wheel drive, no — it tows 600 lb less. Ford rates the standard-length 4×4 at 9,600 lb and the MAX 4×4 at 9,000 lb. With rear-wheel drive it goes the other way and the MAX tows 300 lb more, 6,300 against 6,000. The longest Expedition is not the one that pulls the most, which surprises most people who assume bigger means stronger.
What is the difference between the Expedition and the Expedition MAX?
Length and cargo space, and nothing else structural. The MAX is 221.7 inches long against 209.9 — 11.8 inches more, all of it behind the rear axle. That buys 37.4 cubic feet behind the third row against 22.9, and 123.1 cubic feet behind the first row against 108.5. Both bodies are 94.6 inches wide including mirrors, both seat seven or eight, and both use the same engines. The MAX costs a flat $3,000 and, on four-wheel drive, 600 lb of towing. There is no MAX Tremor.
What MPG does a 2027 Ford Expedition get?
EPA-estimated for 2027: 16 city, 23 highway and 18 combined with rear-wheel drive, and 15 city, 22 highway and 18 combined with four-wheel drive, both on regular gasoline. The EPA’s own annual fuel cost estimate is $3,400 either way. The EPA publishes one rating per driveline — it does not rate the MAX body or the High-Output engine separately, so a MAX Platinum with 440 hp carries the same published figures as an Active.
How many seats does a Ford Expedition have?
Seven or eight, depending on the second row, and the standard-length car and the MAX seat exactly the same number. The Active comes standard with a second-row bench and seats eight, with captain’s chairs available. The Platinum, Tremor and King Ranch come standard with captain’s chairs and seat seven, with the bench available. The MAX does not add a row — it adds cargo space behind the one that is already there.
What engines does the 2027 Expedition come with?
Two, both versions of the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with a 10-speed automatic. The standard engine makes 400 hp and 480 lb-ft and is what an Active, a Platinum or a King Ranch comes with; the Tremor gets the High-Output instead. The High-Output makes 440 hp and 510 lb-ft, is standard on the Tremor and available on the Platinum and MAX Platinum — and is not offered on the Active or the King Ranch at any price. So the $82,695 King Ranch cannot have the engine a $70,550 Platinum can.
What is new on the 2027 Ford Expedition?
Four things, in Ford’s own list. Rear-wheel drive is now available on the Platinum and King Ranch, where it was not before. The Platinum gets a 30th Anniversary Appearance Package with exclusive Blue Ember Metallic paint. Two colors join the range on select models, Bronze Fire Metallic Tinted Clearcoat and Nocturnal Blue Metallic. And the Ford Security Package is included for a year and then becomes a monthly subscription, or a one-time purchase at the time of sale that covers seven years.
Should I buy a 2026 or a 2027 Expedition?
Ford publishes both, and two trims are actually cheaper for 2027 — the Platinum by $3,700 and the King Ranch by $1,665 — while the Active is $900 more and the Tremor $700 more. The 2026 rear-drive car is rated one MPG better on the highway and combined. The 2027 has the new colors, the anniversary package and rear-drive availability on the top trims. On the Platinum and King Ranch a leftover 2026 has to be discounted before it makes sense; on the Active and Tremor it starts ahead. Call us and we will tell you what 2026 stock is actually here.
How safe is the Ford Expedition?
Mixed, and worth reading in full. NHTSA gives the 2026 Expedition and Expedition MAX five stars overall, five for the frontal crash, five for the side crash and five for the side pole test, but three stars for rollover, with a calculated risk of 20.4 percent on 4×4 and 23.7 percent on rear-wheel drive. The IIHS gives it no award: Marginal in the small overlap front test with the structure rated Poor, Marginal in the updated moderate overlap test, Good on the updated side test and Good for seat belt reminders, with headlights, front crash prevention and LATCH unrated. NHTSA has not rated a 2027 and the IIHS results come from 2023 and 2024 test vehicles applied to 2023 through 2026 models.
What colors does the 2027 Ford Expedition come in?
Three at no cost — Agate Black Metallic, Ultra Dark Space Gray and Salt Crystal Gray. At extra cost: Dark Matter Gray Metallic, Glacier Gray Metallic Tri-coat, Marsh Gray, Star White Metallic Tri-coat and Nocturnal Blue Metallic, which is new for 2027. Bronze Fire Metallic Tinted Clearcoat is also new and offered on select models. Blue Ember Metallic can only be had on a Platinum with the 30th Anniversary Appearance Package. Ford publishes no surcharge amounts, so ask us and we will price the specific vehicle.
What is the Expedition Tremor?
The off-road one, and the only Expedition that is four-wheel drive with no rear-drive version. It starts at $82,400, comes standard with the 440 hp High-Output engine, runs 33-inch all-terrain tires and an electronic-locking rear differential, and has 10.6 inches of minimum ground clearance against 8.7 on the rest of the range. It is offered in the standard body only — there is no MAX Tremor — and it tows the same 9,600 lb as any other properly equipped 4×4 Expedition.
