Ford F-150 vs. the competition: Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, and Tundra compared
01 · The short version
Four half-ton trucks, four different strengths
Most full-size pickup shoppers in McHenry and Kane counties end up choosing between the same four trucks: the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. They are closer than their ads suggest, and each one is best at something. Here is what each maker publishes, side by side, and where each truck comes out ahead.
The short version
The F-150 has the highest maximum towing (13,500 lb) and payload (2,440 lb) of the four, and the widest choice of engines, including a full hybrid that can power tools. The Silverado costs less to start and offers a diesel. The Ram has the longest powertrain warranty and air suspension. The Tundra is the only one with a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick.
02 · Side by side
The numbers, from each maker
Checked Sept. 23, 2026 against each maker’s own website, press materials, and brochures. Where a maker’s site did not publish a figure we could confirm, the cell is left blank rather than filled from a third party. Maximums apply to one specific configuration, so a truck on the lot may be rated lower.

Two of these trucks have new versions on the way. Chevrolet revealed a 2027 Silverado 1500 in June 2026 and says it goes on sale at the end of the year, rated to tow up to 13,700 lb. Ford has announced a 2027 F-150. We will update this comparison when both are in dealerships.
03 · Where the F-150 wins
What the F-150 does best
Towing and payload
13,500 lb of towing (3.5L EcoBoost, 4×4 SuperCrew with the Max Trailer Tow Package) and 2,440 lb of payload (3.5L EcoBoost, 4×2) are the highest maximums of the four.
A hybrid that runs your tools
The PowerBoost hybrid makes 430 hp and 570 lb-ft, and Pro Power Onboard turns the bed into a generator: 2.4 kW standard on the hybrid, 7.2 kW available.
The most ways to build it
Three cabs, three beds, six engines from the 2.7L to the 720-hp Raptor R, and trims from the work-truck XL to the Platinum.
Hands-free highway driving
BlueCruise comes standard from the Lariat up and is available on the XLT. It needs an active plan after the trial.

04 · Where the others win
Where each rival beats the F-150
An honest comparison has to say this part too. If one of these matters most to you, the other truck may be the better buy.
Silverado 1500: price and diesel
The Work Truck starts $2,685 below the F-150 XL, and the 3.0L Duramax diesel, rated up to 28 mpg highway by Chevrolet, has no F-150 equivalent. Super Cruise hands-free driving works while towing today.
Ram 1500: warranty and ride
Ram covers the powertrain on 2026 trucks for 10 years or 100,000 miles, double Ford’s. Crew Cab models offer four-corner air suspension, which the F-150 does not.
Tundra: crash-test results
The Tundra crew cab is a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick. The F-150, Silverado, and Ram have no 2026 award and are all rated Poor in the updated moderate overlap front test.
05 · Which one fits
Match the truck to the job
- You tow near the limit. The F-150’s ratings lead, but if your trailer is past 13,000 lb, a Super Duty is the safer margin.
- You need power at the job site. Only the F-150 PowerBoost combines a full hybrid with up to 7.2 kW of exportable power.
- You drive long highway miles. Compare the Silverado diesel with the F-150 PowerBoost on the EPA’s fuel economy site for the exact configurations you are considering.
- You want the lowest price. The Silverado WT starts lowest. The F-150 XL is next, and our current Ford incentives can change the order.
- You want a smaller truck. The Ranger tows up to 7,500 lb in a midsize size.
Drive the numbers. See how the F-150 feels with the configuration you would actually buy.
