Where are Fords made? Every model and the plant that builds it
01 · The short version
Where are Fords made?
Most of the Fords we sell are built in the United States, at plants in Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, and Kentucky. Three models come from Mexico: the Maverick, the Bronco Sport, and the Mustang Mach-E. The closest plant to Huntley is Chicago Assembly on the city’s Southeast Side, where every Explorer is built.
The short version
F-150: Michigan and Missouri. Super Duty and Expedition: Kentucky. Explorer: Chicago. Bronco and Ranger: Michigan. Transit: Missouri. Maverick, Bronco Sport, and Mustang Mach-E: Mexico. The first character of a VIN tells you the country: 1, 4, or 5 for the U.S., 2 for Canada, 3 for Mexico.

03 · Trucks
Where Ford trucks are made
Every U.S.-market F-150 comes from one of two plants: Dearborn Truck, at Ford’s Rouge complex in Michigan, or Kansas City Assembly in Claycomo, Missouri, which also builds the Transit and E-Transit. The Rouge Electric Vehicle Center next door built the all-electric F-150 Lightning until Ford ended its production in December 2025. Ford says the next Lightning will be an extended-range electric truck built at the same plant.
The Super Duty pickups and the Expedition come from Kentucky Truck in Louisville, which Ford calls its largest and highest-revenue U.S. plant, with about 11,500 employees. Super Duty chassis cabs, the E-Series, and the F-650 and F-750 are built at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake. Ford is also adding Super Duty production at its Oakville, Ontario plant in 2026.
The Ranger and Bronco share Michigan Assembly in Wayne. The Maverick, Ford’s compact hybrid pickup, is the exception: it is built in Hermosillo, Mexico, alongside the Bronco Sport.

04 · Illinois
The Explorer is built in Chicago
Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant, on the city’s Southeast Side, opened in 1924 building the Model T. Ford calls it its oldest continuously operating production facility, and it marked its 100th anniversary in August 2024 with about 5,000 people working there.
Today it builds the Explorer in every trim, from the Active to the Platinum, plus the Police Interceptor Utility and the Lincoln Aviator. Ford’s Chicago Stamping Plant in Chicago Heights, open since 1958, presses body panels for it. From our store it is about 70 miles and an hour and a half by I-90, I-94, and the Bishop Ford.
05 · Mexico and what is next
The Fords built in Mexico, and the plants changing next
Hermosillo, since 1986
Builds the Maverick and Bronco Sport in Sonora, Mexico.
Cuautitlán, since 1964
Builds the Mustang Mach-E near Mexico City.
Louisville Assembly: the Fathom
Built the Escape and Lincoln Corsair until December 2025. Ford is spending nearly $2 billion to retool it for the Ford Fathom, an electric midsize pickup due in 2027.
Tennessee Truck Plant: from 2029
The Tennessee campus Ford first called BlueOval City was renamed in December 2025. Ford says it will build new Built Ford Tough truck models there, with production starting in 2029.
06 · The company question
Is Ford an American company?
Yes. Ford Motor Company was founded in 1903 and is headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan. Where a company is based and where a vehicle is built are different questions, and like every global automaker, Ford builds some models abroad. The F-150, Super Duty, Explorer, Expedition, Bronco, Ranger, and Mustang are all assembled in the U.S.
Wherever a Ford is built, it carries the same Ford warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles bumper to bumper, with longer powertrain and hybrid coverage. Our parts department stocks Ford parts for all of them.
07 · Check it yourself
How to tell where your Ford was built
- The VIN. The first character shows the country: 1, 4, or 5 for the U.S., 2 for Canada, and 3 for Mexico. The VIN is on the driver’s side of the dashboard, at the base of the windshield.
- The window sticker. A new vehicle’s sticker lists the final assembly point: the city and state or country. That is more specific than the VIN.
- Ask us. Any vehicle on our lot, new or used, and we can look it up.
